The Cassandra complex is a psychological phenomenon where one’s warnings, advice, concerns or information is ignored, dismissed or disbelieved by others.
Can also manifest in situation one can see the truth but feels powerless to convince others.
Some other terms that have been used to describe the phenomenon include; The Cassandra Syndrome, Cassandra Phenomenon, Cassandra Dilemma, Cassandra Curse etc.
The English dictionary defines Cassandra as a person who makes predictions which are never believed but turn out to be true.
The origin
The term originates from a Greece mythology where Cassandra, the daughter or Troy’s King Priam and his queen Hecuba. Apollo mesmerized by Cassandra’s beauty offered her a gift of prophecy if she gave in his romantic advances something Cassandra refused.
Furiated, Apollo cursed her ensuring no one would believe her warnings or prediction. Cassandra had knowledge of future events but could not convince others. At one time, she foresaw the fall of the Trojan horse but her warnings and predictions were dismissed.
Cassandra Complex and Carl Jung.
Carl Jung was the pioneer of the term complexes which he claimed were the mini-personalities that run the show from the government without our awareness.
However, we have no proof where he used the term Cassandra complex.
Most Jungian complexes originated from the unconscious mind unlike Cassandra which is more interpersonal.
In 1949, the French Philosopher Gaston Bachelard coined the Phrase Cassandra Complex to refer to the belief that things could be known in advance.
Psychologist Melanie Klein equally used it to demonstrate the human moral conscience of giving warnings. Using the greek metaphor as an example, Klein explained how warnings or informations can be met with denial as a defense against anxiety.
Examples of Cassandra Complex.
A trauma survivor trying to explain to familly members of his ordeal with the Abuser but his/her crys are invalidated.
An individual speaking against systematic injustices but is ignored.
A woman in a narcissistic relationship gets disbelieved when sharing experiences. Dr Jean Bolen, a professor at the university of Carlfonia refers to this situation as The Cassandra Woman and Apollo Man.
An employee foresee s potential future direction of the company or industry but you’re dismissed. For instance predicting a fall in stock market.
No better example for this other than Warren Buffet who after warning against the 1990 stock fall earned the name ” The wall street Cassandra “.
The same can be applied in politics for instance Dean Philips who foresaw the Loss of Joe Biden before the 2022 elections.
An individual whose advise is ignored or dismissed for being young.
Are the experts like Dr Joe Dispenza, Robert Greene and Chase Hughes warning against the Impending dangers the modern Cassandra ?
Effects;
• Cassandra may feel self doubt and degraded self-esteem.
• Ignoring valid warnings might lead to guilt when they arrive.
• Ignored warnings make us less prepared for what’s coming.
• Strained relationships.
How to Manage The Cassandra Complex.
Sometimes we find ourselves in Cassandra shoes and this can be stressful..
To manage, Be aware of the complex when it’s triggered.
Equally, find like-minded people who can lend you an ear. Stop begging stones to listen to you.. We’ll, it’s better to speak to Stones even more than speaking to people committed to misunderstanding you.
Equally, Practice the art of discernment. Stop trying to convince people committed to misunderstanding you..
