The Pariah Complex/Syndrome.
The Pariah syndrome refers to a situation where one is viewed as flawed or unacceptable to the group hence avoided by others or cut off from some form of human contacts.
It’s like one with a tainted brand that getting close to him/her make one contaminated.
A collection of memories, beliefs and emotions one feels in connection above form what we shall call The Pariah Complex.
A Pariah Complex doesn’t have to be formed out of personal experiences but also observed.
It triggers a Belonging Based Shame to the Pariah who feels unacceptable or unlovable.
Some refer to it as a ‘symbolic mark of cain”:.
The Pariah is perceived as dirty by others.
In ancient tribes, public shame was weaponized by those in authority as a corrective and punishment tool. For instance; Those who were not joining the tribe in working for instance, could be subjected to Public shame where the authority could label them as person non grata and hence couldn’t be provided with meals or sex. Or females were asked to deny them sex. Our ancestors’ lived in a tribe of around 150 people.
This is different from Ostracism complex where one could be Exiled from the tribe..In pariah, one is shamed and avoided, in Ostracism complex, one is chased away from the group.
Both ostracism and Pariah syndromes make the individual feel like an outcast, unlovable and less worthy however.
Some of the Experiences that may trigger this complex include;
• A negative rumor or gossip from a friend or someone who make the people around you start ignoring you.
• A parent warns their kids against interacting with you. You’re a bad example.
• Authors and truthseekers who dared to speak the unpleasant truth to the people were avoided. For instance; Friedrich Nietzsche whose reputation got contaminated after his ‘God is Dead’ remark that was misinterpreted.
• Being embarrassed Infront of others.
