Definition of Mental Health and Why We Need It.

When it comes to Mental Health, everyone seems to have his/her own definition of what it means.

I personally live in a Culture where discussion around Mental Health and Mental illness is associated with some form of a taboo or the guys running in the street.

But it’s not.

Infact we are at a times when the discussion around mental health and awareness needs to be amplified.

Like enough of my woo woos.

What is Mental health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as a “state of well-being that makes one able to cope with life stressors, work productively and able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

So let’s say, Mental health is the overall state of our wellbeing -psychologically, emotionally and socially.

It’s like an underlying foundation that influences our ability to think, feel, act and deal with stressful moments we encounter along.

It’s just not an absence of mental disorders as many assume, and if we must include the disorder part in the discussion then let’s say ; Mental health is the overall well being of our mind whether in presence or absence of a mental disorder. It’s just as vitally important as our physical health.

Sadly we live in a culture that dwells much on the physical aspect alot.

Just like there are those who are physically healthier than others, some are mentally healthier than others.Just like our physical health deroriates sometimes, our mental health too wanes some times.

And just like there are various ways we can employ to improve our physical aspect by working on our physical makeup, we too can improve our mental health by working on our psychological makeup.
